With a total floor space of 66㎡, β Pavilion will house information on the philosophy, history, and usage of β Village, and serve as a link to those within and outside the university. This facility was originally constructed in the courtyard on the west side of the Media Center (M Building) and was moved to β Village. β pavilion, with its all-glass exterior walls, will be managed by a volunteer student group and is expected to become a facility that embodies the Student Built Campus philosophy.

β pavilion Story

Learning How to Create
and How to Demolish

β Pavilion is the first building that was initiated as an SBC project-wide initiative. For the SBC project’s outreach, it was constructed as a temporary two-year building in front of the statue of Yukichi Fukuzawa at the main campus in order to attract attention from inside and outside of the university, rather than placing it within β Village (completed in 2015).
After serving as SBC’s flagship for 2 years, it was disassembled, stored, and then relocated to β Village in Fall 2020 (called the SBC Center before relocation and β Pavilion after relocation).

As (1) relocation to β Village and (2) the participation of students in construction and disassembly processes were already planned at the design phase, metal joints, and metal folded plates were used for wood framing and roofing, respectively, for ease of disassembly and reconstruction. To make activities inside the building recognizable from the outside, glass walls were used on all sides of the building with a large outdoor deck at the front.
The project truly embodied one of SBC’s basic policies, “learn how to create and how to demolish.” (Shohei Matsukawa)
