With a total floor space of 83㎡ and a capacity to accommodate 12 people, this fourth residence building is catered to individual stays. The interior of this unique three-dimensionally connected building is very compact—you will find a bedroom immediately after climbing a ladder from the entrance. While the building is designed for individual use, a bench space was created by students in the courtyard of the building. The communal area is equipped with showers, restrooms, and a kitchen. House 4 will be utilized by the likes of students who stay on campus to work on their assignments and faculty members and researchers for short-term stays.

Closing While Opening
At SFC, there is a culture called “staying” (i.e. students staying on the campus). However, students previously slept together beneath desks or on classroom chairs. As such, there was strong demand for residential housing for individual students to stay comfortably, and β4 offers 12 independent bedrooms to fulfill the need.
Standard hotel-like rooms are finely dispersed while re-forming one building sterically to give each room modest individuality rather than lining them up as standardized rooms. To stimulate interactions among students, there is a common space like an inner courtyard surrounded by individual rooms. By making various associations between components that are simple as parts, the overall building is designed to hold ambiguous properties, e.g. separating while connecting and closing while opening. Also, a system to generate a complete set of pre-cut diagrams and quantities only from architectural volume entries was developed around the same time to streamline the seemingly complex design processes.
