With a total floor space of 214㎡, β Dome is a 15 m diameter dome-shaped facility that can be used mainly for the presentation of research results and exhibitions. β Dome stands out even among the other uniquely shaped buildings of β village. There are no pillars inside, and the dome was designed taking into calculation how voices reverberate within so that sounds will travel effectively during presentations.
For this SBC project, we considered using paper honeycomb panels (PHPs) as a structural material that is easy to handle for students. With conventional techniques, timbered arch structures are necessarily heavy and expensive when constructed using laminated lumber materials, but PHPs composed of a paper honeycomb material in between structural plywood are light and affordable. One arch structure that would be 370kg if using laminated lumber is 220kg with PHPs for this building. (Shigeru Ban)
